Our work helps hundreds of people every year to improve their mental health

Our work and what we do

The heart and soul of our mission at the Angling for Mental Health Initiative (AMHI)

Our work is dedicated to promoting mental wellbeing through the therapeutic benefits of fishing, while also enhancing the sport itself.

Here’s an overview of what we do and our achievements

What we do

Mental Health Support

We use fishing as a tool to support mental health, providing a peaceful and therapeutic environment for individuals of all ages. Our sessions are designed to help participants relax, de-stress, and find solace in nature.

Educational Programmes

Through our “Hooked on Learning” CAST Award training programme and Angling Essentials courses, we teach essential fishing skills and techniques. These programs are structured to develop confidence, build skills, and foster a love for fishing.

Community Events

Our “Let’s Go Fishing” open days are fun, inclusive events where the community can come together to enjoy fishing and learn about its benefits. These days are a great way to introduce newcomers to the sport and promote community spirit.

Social Prescribing

We partner with NHS healthcare providers to offer social prescribing options, where fishing is prescribed as part of a treatment plan for mental health and wellbeing.

Coaching and Training

We offer coaching sessions to enhance angling skills and provide advanced training for enthusiasts. These sessions help to improve techniques, understand the sport better, and develop a lifelong passion for fishing. We also provide other private functions such as birthday parties and corporate events

*coming in 2025* Private functions and corporate events

We offer tailored fishing experiences for private functions and corporate events, perfect for birthday parties, team-building activities, and private coaching sessions. These events are designed to provide a unique and enjoyable fishing experience, combining relaxation with skill-building.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, organising a team outing, or looking for a private coaching session, our bespoke packages cater to all needs. Held in picturesque locations around the county, our events offer a refreshing escape from the daily grind and a chance to connect with nature.

Our experienced coaches ensure that everyone, regardless of skill level, enjoys the event and gains valuable fishing knowledge. With flexible scheduling and customised plans, we aim to make every event memorable and impactful.

Achievements

  • Successfully launched multiple training programmes that have seen high participation and positive feedback.
  • Hosted numerous community events that brought people together and introduced many to the joys of fishing.
  • Established strong partnerships with local healthcare providers for social prescribing initiatives.
  • Expanded our outreach through collaborations with sponsors and affiliates, enhancing our impact and reach.
  • Worked alognside governing bodies for angling and the environment, to promote angling and mental health in video advertsiing campaigns

Our role in advertising campaigns

We teamed up with the Environment Agency and 23 Red London (A media company) to produce the 2024 video fishing licence campaign.  We worked alongside Harry Clark (The ‘Traitors’ UK gameshow winner) and his best friend, also called Harry, starring in the video that was for tackling stress during stress awareness month.  We discussed how going fishing can benefit our wellbeing and reduce stress, what AMHI was about and how fishing licence money was used.

Check out the video below for the ‘Licence to Chill’ campaign 2024.

Donations and Support

At Angling Mental Health Initiative (AMHI), donations play a crucial role in sustaining and expanding our projects and event days. Through generous contributions, we are able to continue providing mental health support, low cost educational programs, free to attend community events, and more.

Funding through product sales

Our event day shop (Also available online) offers a range of ‘on the day’ discounted products, including caps, angler’s handbooks, logbooks, swim mappers, and wellbeing journals. Every purchase directly supports our initiatives. The revenue generated from these sales helps fund essential resources, cover event costs, and maintain our facilities. By purchasing our products, you not only receive a high-quality fishing product and educational materials but also contribute to a cause that makes a real difference in people’s lives.

Corporate involvement

Many companies have recognised the value of our work and have supported us at the highest levels. CEOs and business leaders from various industries have contributed to our initiatives, understanding the importance of mental health and community wellbeing. Their involvement often goes beyond financial support; they also provide valuable resources, expertise, and volunteer time. This corporate engagement amplifies our reach and impact, allowing us to serve more individuals and communities.

How it works

The funds we receive through donations and product sales are meticulously allocated to various aspects of our work:

  • Mental Health Support: Ensuring we can provide free or subsidised sessions for those in need.
  • Educational Programs: Developing comprehensive training materials, training our staff, and maintaining high standards of teaching.
  • Community Events: Organising open days and community fishing events, making them accessible to everyone.
  • Facilities and Equipment: Maintaining overheads, purchasing necessary equipment, and ensuring safety standards.
  • Outreach and Awareness: Promoting our services and mental health awareness through marketing and community engagement.

Each donation, whether it’s financial, equipment, or time, directly impacts our ability to deliver these vital services. Our community events and training programs thrive because of this support, enabling us to reach more individuals and promote the therapeutic benefits of fishing.

How to Donate

Donations can be made through several convenient methods:

  • Online via PayPal: A secure and straightforward way to contribute.
  • Event Days: Donations can be made in person at any of our events.
  • Tackle Donations: We accept fishing tackle and equipment donations, which are used in our training programs and events.
  • Purchase one of many of our products online or at our event days.

Your support is invaluable in helping us continue our mission to use fishing as a tool for mental health and community development. Together, we can make a difference.
